Agro-industry
Alentejo is going through a transition phase. After the creation of large areas of new crops, agricultural production has undergone an unparalleled increase in the last decade. A significant part of this production, with products ranging from olive oil to wine, from fruit to vegetables, from cereals to nuts, is processed outside the region. The step that must inevitably be taken is to assert Alentejo’s capacity to host agroindustries.
With that in mind, the presence of more than 30 industrial parks spread throughout Alqueva’s Project area of influence and the accessibility and proximity to the main consumer markets that create conditions for investment in this activity segment must be highlighted.
In summary, the agroindustry sector in Alentejo is characterized by the following attributes: large agricultural production; more than 30 industrial parks with free areas for the installation of agroindustries; good road and rail networks; the connection to the Port of Sines; and Beja’s airport.
The Alqueva Multipurpose Enterprise is an anchor investment for the development of Alentejo, with the reinforcement of dams for public supplying, serving around 200 thousand people, giving life to agriculture in the region, with an area equipped with irrigation of around 130 thousand acres and an expansion area of over 40 thousand acres perfect for sectors such as industry, energy production and tourism.
